Planetary Conquest

So I apologize if this has been answered, but I did not see it in my cursory search.
I saw that the general idea is to push in, give yourself some space, and launch troops onto the planet. Is there any bonus to remaining in orbit, like fire-support or suppression of enemy militia morale? A consistent them in scifi is that, once you've lose the high orbitals, you've lost the planet.
Because the idea of being able to risk leaving your fleet in position to be counter-attacked, in order to gain speed up planetary capture, or lose fewer ground units, seems logical.
And maybe if they retake their orbitals, they can pound your guys on the ground, to slow up the capture of the planet, or force a surrender of the assaulters or the like?

That actually seems like a new idea that hasn't been said before. I think what you said seems more realistic. Esp. with the fact that people conquer and then flee. Let's see what Sypheria says about this.

I wait with bated breath.
Also, I don't like the idea of sending down my troops and then just o7ing off, leaving them to fend for themselves with the planet's militia. Seems like kind of a dick move!

is it a dick move if you are acaean? I mean if they have a sorta 'hive' mind then alls fair right? lol :)
