I like the idea of the circle, to be sure. But perhaps the circle color could indicate how quickly the ship is dying, as in, based on the percentage of its health that it has lost recently? It depends on how many of the ingame mechanics depend on saving such a ship with repair/retreat options.

The problem with a circle is that if you have a battle of 800 units (again) there are gona be lots of circles all over the place and that can be irritating somtimes.
But you could also have an option to turn them of in the game settings.

Eliminate the HP visuals completely. Make it so you have to check the status of your ship hulls if you want to see the health.

BAM, depth, strategy, logistics.

Just a crazy idea. :D

Why not have the bar showing only if (at least) one of the two conditions bellow are met:
- Health bellow xx% (xx could be 10? 20?)
- Some health was lost during the last xx seconds (there again, xx could be 10, 20 ?)
Czar's idea is also nice, but what happens when you have 1000 units to check ? can you efficiently check the status of your 1000 ships' hulls ?

Maybe with some sort of drone or scanner capable of doing large group scans.. You have a good point ^^

Perhaps a button to press to show/hide health bars so people can decide for themselves? :)

Even better ^^

You can already press ctrl+Z right now in-game to eliminate the entire HUD but there isn't a way to just get rid of the hp displays.
