Pre-steam alpha development funding discussion

Postby Aetherblade » Sat Feb 03, 2018 11:24 am

(If you guys haven’t checked out our first post last December, please do so. It contains vital information about our development so far: http://forum.novusaeterno.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=14825)

Hey guys!

Today we would like to start a discussion with you about the funding of HADES 9 during our pre-steam alpha development stage. If you have any ideas or constructive feedback, please join us on Discord (https://Discord.gg/JnMrrhg) or leave your input below!

Before we start, I want to make clear that we are not trying to sell more to those who are already backing us. We’ll transfer any Kickstarter rewards (or however you backed us), and any of the old rewards that would not fit with HADES 9 can be replaced with new ones, chosen from various options we’ll think of with you guys. By then, you’ll probably have more than you could want :).

We and the vast majority of you have indicated that you would prefer it that we go on without a publisher if possible, so we are now trying to figure out the best ways to fund development until we hit Steam Early Access.

We have a small team, so we won’t need a lot of money. That said, we could certainly use a little more in order to keep development going quickly, and on a personal level, to pay our rents. Any additional money we get goes to producing more art assets, more capital ships, escorts, and so forth.

Already backing?
Those of you who are already backing us (thank you!) will still get rewards for having done so. Where possible it will be the reward you backed for in the first place, but where that is not feasible, we will work with you to find a suitable replacement! In addition, we’ll also be looking into getting our old backers some extra rewards as thank you for the support, and the patience you have shown.

Possible Structures
The first topic we wanted to talk about is the various ways development could be funded that we could think of. We do not need to select just one, we can easily go with a mix or even all of the options, and if you have any more ideas we haven’t thought of, please share them with us!

A note about one time purchases vs a monthly trickle.
For development purposes, it would be much preferred to have a monthly trickly in of funds than a one time purchase in general. A monthly trickle, even if the total amount is smaller, let’s us plan ahead much easier.

War Bonds
One idea we had was using the War Bonds similar to how it was used by the developers of Heroes and Generals. It allows you to basically do a long-term investment that’ll get you much more for your buck than you would normally get by buying straight up store credit, a great option for those people who do not want or can’t decide what options to go for otherwise.

When you buy War Bonds, you don’t get your store credits immediately. What you DO get is a monthly trickly back of your investment (to be decided upon.), and then when the Bond matures you get your entire investment back as store credit against the normal price as well.

For example:
You buy War Bonds for 6 months against 11% interest at $100 (for easy math xD). This would mean that you get $11 in store credit per month, for six months, AND then at the end of the 6 months your initial investment on top of that, for a total of $166 of store credit.

Monthly version:
The earlier the person buys into War Bonds, the higher the interest is. Since not everyone has a large disposable income, we could also make an option for a monthly subscription here (to reiterate, monthly ingame is MUCH better for us). This would allow people to buy War Bonds automatically each month against the % that they had when their subscription began.

Tiers / packages
They are Billions used this system successfully recently, so it’s probably a good option.

Going with this system we would be offering multiple tiers or packages to choose from, each with their own rewards and bonuses. We could also use an early bird system here, giving people who help get the ball rolling early a nice bonus.

À la carte
Pick and choose your own rewards to get exactly what you are most interested in. Not interested in getting your own NPC ingame, but you do want to design a bunch of ships? This would be a good system to make that happen.

Game-pre ordering
The obvious one, pre-ordering the game with early access. We’ll throw some extra stuff in as well like skins of course, but it would basically just be the game.

Patreon
Patreon could also be a nice way to deal with this. Since Patreon subscriptions are a monthly thing, we would know exactly what we have to spend going into the future, allowing us to plan ahead much more effective.

Some possible Patreon rewards we came up with:
  • A monthly “Design a thing with the developers” session. Work with us on something we are currently developing for the game, this can be anything from new special effects, planets, to NPC’s, to give some examples.
  • A Patreon channel on Discord.
  • We could do a QA once a month here for everyone in the channel, which would go into an update or forum post for everyone else a bit later.
  • Play a monthly (board) game with the devs.
  • Early previews of stuff we are working on, such as models, skins, systems, etc.

Flagship Funding
Adopt a tree, but for flagships. Going into this would allow you to help design Flagships with us, as they develop, probably through a voting system for each stage of development. We could go with a tiering system here, where the higher tiered investors get more say in development.

Some of the things we could be voting for:
  • After having received block outs (early, simple, models) of the flagship that we get from various artists, we can vote to see which one to go forward with, and which ones can wait for the next round or get discarded.
  • What kind of ship it should be, often important for the kind of model we want.
  • Model details
  • The default skin.

And so forth, we’ll probably end up with some specific stages we know we want to vote about ahead of time, and some voting times that come up at random points. Aside from the form and function of the ship, the people helping can also come up with the lore and get a special skin. The skin would unique to people who have adopted a baby flagship.

This could be done either through a flat tier (get to help through the entire development of a flagship) or as part of a Patreon monthly subscription. In the latter case you could help with every Flagship we work on as long as you are donating.

If you have any other ideas or feedback please hop on our Discord channel and pitch in. We talk about everything to do with the game, but we also have a channel just for this: https://Discord.gg/TGRBxyq

The Rewards
Here are a bunch of the possible rewards we have thought of, though we are more than willing to add new ones or modify this list. It’s just a good starting point to go from with you guys, we think. But please do let us know any ideas, we can use them all! There are no bad ideas during a brainstorming session.

One thing to keep in mind is that we currently have no art budget, so anything involving an art team would probably not be available on day 1 of going live with those backing options.

Here is a unsorted list of our ideas:

  • Design a Escort or Civilian ship: how it functions, the lore, how you research it, it’s power level. The power level could be done with a point system, where you get to put them in different categories (up to a limit), and the more points you use the more powerful and rare it is in the game. We’ll probably do this through a web form format.
  • Design a flagship component, using the rules above.
  • Design a resource for the game, used for Survival (ie. water, oxygen, etc.), Production, or Crafting.
  • Various Ship skins.
  • Crew skins.
  • Admirals can also use these.
  • Admiral only skins.
  • Ship engines colors or effects.
  • Different flagship internals.
  • Flagship internal lighting.
  • Design your own NPC (HADES 9 citizen, crew, commander, pirate, etc.)
  • A special version of the game for those who pre-order before we even go live on steam. What this would include we will have to decide upon.
  • The War Bonds system.

Please do get in touch with us, we would really love to get your input on this. We want to have an open discussion with you all. The best place to get our brainstorming really going is our channel specifically for this subject on our Discord: https://Discord.gg/TGRBxyq

If monthly is better for you guys, I say go with the war bonds idea. Unfortunately, I feel like it will cause some confusion, but hopefully it will be easy enough to explain.

Otherwise, tiered is always good... it’s a tried and true method. Tiered + some a la carte was kind of what the last campaign was like, and I liked that.

Hi here,
Thanks again for all these clarifications, news and resumes over the posts and news on Kickstarter too :)

For the "monthly sub", for me the best thing is also the War Bonds idea.
I've played a lot on H&G since the web version and that's a very nice system I think it will fit well here too.

So yes for me I'll definitely go with multiple choices of "War Bonds" like 1, 3, 6 and 12 months for example.

This might be slightly controversial, but people love to own and name real estate in games, and will put down cash for such. I presume the game will have some kinds of static structures out beyond the Hades 9 station. These could confer very minor benefits. Perhaps they provide refueling and/or storage, or a shortcut to other places (like an artificial wormhole). Lore-wise you could explain it as these are ancient structures, and the owners have worked out the codes to access them. The owner could also grant access to their allies. However, I can certainly see the P2W aspect of this, so best avoided?

I certainly like the idea of design your own NPC. When there's an art budget, perhaps a photo could be provided to the devs and they could create the NPC face that way, and we could decide on the characteristics and phrases of the NPC?

Sounds like you guys already have picked the one yall want to do the most. I'd definitely would get the War Bonds and monthly payment option or both at the same time. The prizes/rewards stated sound absolutely amazing and any gamer would love to have those options in a game.

We will be adding in player made persistent structures in space post-launch, will be one of the main expansions to the game.

In terms of naming, its not a bad idea, we could maybe do something with system naming, i.e. a player gets to name an area as well as be sighted as the explorer who first discovered it.

Both us and you guys need to like a system for it to work XD honestly warbands can also work quite well, and im surprised how many people have really drawn towards that idea.

It's not exactly that surprising, many games ive played or heard of have used a sort of warbond like system where the player invests some amount and gets that amount plus extra back over time :)

I do have one question, would it be better to purchase the infiltrator tier now or would you get the exact same perks and rewards if I were to get it at a later date?

You cannot purchase any backing for novus aeterno infiltrator backing anymore, shouldn't have been able to for a while. But in general the old backers of kickstarter and novus aeterno will be getting additional gifts over time, so technically it would have been better to buy infiltrator before then now.
